Lakeview patients often ask what they should expect during the recovery process after undergoing a facelift. Although everyone will have a different recovery experience, most facelift procedures are similar in terms of restrictions and recovery milestones.

1-3 Days Post-Surgery

When you awaken after the facelift in Lakeview depending on the technique performed, you will have a large wrap around your head and sometimes a drain as well. Moderate pain is expected, which can be managed with medication. Pain, bruising, and swelling of the face and neck will peak 48 hours after surgery, with most patients rating their pain level at 6 – 8 out of 10 at this time.

Because most patients will remain a bit groggy, we recommend having the assistance of a caregiver during the first day after surgery. You will likely see your surgeon by the third day to make sure you don’t have a hematoma and to remove your drain if you have one.

You will be encouraged to sleep on pillows that help keep you head elevated above your heart and to rest in an upright position during the day.

1-3 Weeks Post-Surgery

Depending on the facelift technique, you may be instructed to wear a compression garment, with breaks during the day, for up to 14 days. Pain and swelling will persist throughout the first and second weeks but are steadily declining now. By the first week post-op, most patients will have their stitches removed and will no longer require pain medication.

During the second week you may notice some tightness, numbness, tingling, or burning in the neck area and around the ears. By the end of the second week, you will begin to feel markedly better and may be cleared to begin light exercise by the third week.

4-6 Weeks Post-Surgery

By week four, makeup will cover any remaining bruising and your surgeon will let you know if you can engage in more vigorous exercise at this point. Weeks five and six will most likely be when you are cleared for all normal activities and you will no longer exhibit bruising and swelling. Lastly, it’s important to understand changes in skin sensation and minor swelling can come and go for up to a year after your procedure. Contact Dr. Adam J. Cohen for a facelift in Lakeview today!
